Past Modals Intermediate Lesson Plan: "The Worst Week Ever"

Here's a lesson plan that is suitable for Intermediate and Upper Intermediate language students with past modal verbs being the focus. The lesson requires only about 15 minutes of prep to pull off and has a heavy focus on speaking. I recommend doing this lesson for groups of students who already have a decent understanding of past participles. Take a look! I also have a video demonstration of this lesson plan in action that I've posted below. Intro: 1 minute Come into class asking students how their day is going. Have a glass of water with you that you are drinking. When you they ask you about your day, spill the water all over yourself. Elicit the concept of having a bad day. Lead In: 5-7 minutes Demo out the questions and put students in groups 1. Do you often have bad days? 2. What are three things that can typically happen to make a day go wrong? 3. What are 4 bad, but funny, things that have happened to you this year? Target Language: 10 minutes  Before i...

Grammar Demo Video - Past Modals

Here's a video for a lesson I did on Past Modals for Intermediate students. I'll post the lesson in a day or two. In a nutshell, students have to create their worst week ever and use past modals to give each other advice. Check out the video!

Video Demonstration for 'The Deadliest Animal'

Here's the video demonstration for the lesson plan 'The Deadliest Animal'. The class I shot it with was a band new group of students at The Language House TEFL. Each course, the trainers of the program teach a demo lesson for the TEFL trainees with the Czech Students. If you like the video, please leave a comment on Youtube and subscribe to my channel. ESL Eliciting Demo

Here's a video of some basic eliciting in the classroom.

Vocab Demo Lesson

Here's a new lesson that I did for the 'Create Your Own Movie' lesson plan. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It was with a brand new group of students, so I didn't know what to expect from them. Lucky for me, they were a really good group of Czech intermediate students and participation, for the most part, was pretty high. The only main complaint that I have with my teaching from watching the video is that I'm not eliciting the errors from the students as much as I could. If you like the video and what I'm doing with the blog, please follow me, subscribe to my channel on youtube and 'like' my videos. I think it helps me get more exposure.  Take a look     Cheers,    Chris The Language House TEFL

ESL Grammar Lesson Demonstration

Take a look at a video that I just shot for the gradable/ungradable adjective lesson that was posted a few weeks ago. The actual lesson was about 35 minutes long and it was done to intermediate-upper intermediate students. It was my first time meeting them, so I start of the lesson with a bit of an icebreaker. The video is just shy of 10 minutes and it's been edited with labels to show you what part of the lesson we are in. Let me know your thoughts, and if you want your own lesson created, give me a grammar point or topic, and I will be happy to make one for you. Here's the video   Cheers, Chris The Language House TEFL

I Love TEFL Videos - Language House TEFL

We had this fun thing that we used to do (and still do at TLH TEFL www.thelanguagehouse.net ) which involved playing a poker style game in class. I always thought that fun punishments were a lot more motivating than giving out hacky rewards in the classroom. I'll probably have a separate page eventually about my thoughts on motivation, token economy and different reward systems later on. Here are some cute and funny videos that we made of the losing team(s). Basically if the team lost they had to go outside and yell "I LOVE TEFL" a certain number of times.  What made it the best though was that we did this during the first day of the course.  I've always thought that in teaching it's good to set the tone of your pace and style to your students right from the get go. Don't be afraid to push them a bit if you can. I loved that we do this during the first day and it usually creates a WTF moment for the students. I think overall everyone has a really good time ...
